Design a Day You Will Win

Jul 29, 2024

As your business grows, things can get more complicated, and you will be confronted with growth hurdles that can be difficult to get over. We have talked about these hurdles before. Why do you get stuck?

Simply put, “What got you here is not what will get you there.” Which means you need a new set of skills and capabilities to lead your team to the next level of growth. You can’t just do more of the same thing, or you will burn out.

If you truly want entrepreneurial freedom, it is important for you to be very aware of how you are using your time on a daily basis. One of the keys to continued lifetime growth is to always be increasing the value of your contributions to the business.

After coaching hundreds of drycleaners, I learned most of my clients schedule too many things to be done in one day. Usually, the value of those things is relatively low (an administrative assistant working for $20 per hour can do most of the things the owner is doing).

Let’s say you have 10 things on your list to do today. If you only accomplish five of the things on your list, you will likely focus on the five things you did not accomplish, rather than the five things you did accomplish. You might think it was a losing day. Then you go home feeling like a failure and wake up the next day and do it all again.

This person has created a game they will usually lose, and feel like a failure at. This is when the business feels like a grind, you feel like a failure, and your growth stalls out.

You need to change the game. What I do is put only three things on my to-do list for each day. I learned this from my past coach, Dan Sullivan. Once I adopted this model, I rarely ever feel like I have a losing day. Instead, I am very results-focused about getting these three things done. When they are done, my work day is over.

Most people are working in the time and effort economy. Which means they feel they will have more success when they put more time and effort into something.

As an entrepreneur, we work differently and have the opportunity to work in the results economy, where we can have freedom once we accomplish our desired results.

By achieving three wins per day, you will increase your confidence, keep moving forward, and you will not get stuck in one spot. This will allow you to celebrate your progress rather than celebrating the number of hours you’ve put in, robbing you of your potential freedom.

It’s time to change your game if you are stuck. Give it a shot. Only put three things on your list for each day, and ideally write them down the night before so your subconscious can begin working on a solution for those three things. Progress is a great motivator. Then you will begin to add things to your list that are more valuable and contribute to the growth of your business.

Only three things on your list for tomorrow...
Can you do it?

Have a great week!
Dave
